Tungsten–Carbide coated compressor rods offer these benefits:
1. Durable to wear and impact. Tungsten can be sprayed to base metal up to Rc.70 hardness, or a rating of nine on the Moh scale, surpassed only by diamond which has a rating of ten. Rod temperature during coating does not exceed 350 F so that the elasticity limit of the base metal will not be altered.
2. Resistant to corrosive gases. The addition of Chromium to the base material provides the resistance required in many corrosive gas applications. Nickel base coatings may be used for severe corrosion applications.
The typical sprayed parts are compressor piston rods and pump plungers in corrosive applications.
